Caterpillar Inc., the company likely best known for its sunshine yellow backhoes, dozers, pavers and excavators, is marking its 100th anniversary with a limited edition collection of ruggedly stylish boots.
Because what might be lesser known is the brand known for building up and tearing down entered the footwear business three decades ago and offers grape and dove-colored sneaker-like work shoes and men’s casual footwear.
Embracing the breadth of its style diversity, the heavy equipment’s Cat Footwear brand is offering three new boots that honor the company’s role in American history underground, above ground and in the sky.
Caterpillar played a role in: constructing the 31-mile long tunnel the English Channel that connects France to Great Britain, building San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and powering an 85-foot antenna that allowed Apollo 11 astronauts to communicate with NASA tracking stations.
“For the past century, Caterpillar Inc. has shaped the infrastructure of our world – building bridges that define cities, digging tunnels that unite nations, and enabling space-age communications,” said Thomas Kennedy, group president of Wolverine Work, of which Cat Footwear is a division. “Each boot in the collection is crafted as a tribute to the monumental feats that have shaped our world.”
Cat Footwear started as a small collection of work boots in 1994, but its new release represents its expansive lifestyle shoe line.
The Golden Gate Bridge Boot incorporates a “cable system” and structural cage as a nod to the connector’s design. The gold hardware recognizes the bridge’s name.
With a stacked sole that’s also lightweight, the Apollo 11 Boot drew inspiration from astronauts’ gear, and its dusky shade summons imagery of first steps on the moon.
Paying homage to the trains barreling through the Chunnel, the Channel Tunnel features sole lights and lone functioning headlight.
All of the limited-edition boots are available at catfootwear.com.
